Jewish Identity, Race, & Antisemitism in US Pop Culture

Come learn how popular culture can help us to challenge antisemitism. For this talk, Jonathan Branfman will draw from his new book, Millennial Jewish Stars: Navigating Racial Antisemitism, Masculinity, and White Supremacy (New York University Press, 2024). The book uses examples from film, television, and digital media to clarify how antisemitism works in real life, and especially how antisemitism interacts with race. Although these topics can seem abstract, they're really as familiar to many Americans as their favorite sitcom or star. No matter whether you personally follow the stars mentioned in Jonathan's book (such as the biracial Jewish rap superstar, Drake), the talk will offer illuminating insights about the American Jewish experience.

Jonathan Branfman, PhD is a Research Associate in the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute for Jewish Gender Studies at Brandeis University. He researches Jewish identity and antisemitism in US popular culture, including film, television, and digital media. Before coming to Brandeis, Jonathan has held postdoctoral fellowships at Stanford University, Cornell University, and the College of William & Mary.
